Bras against cancer

Smartbar–Discovery Channel NewsYou’ve probably heard about “smart clothes” that don’t wrinkle, ward off stains and can even take out the garbage. (The first two yes, the last one I made up–but that would be cool).

Well, how about a bra that detects cancer?

It’s on the way, according to researchers at the Center for Materials Research and Innovation at the University of Bolton in the U.K. The bra uses microwave radiometry to detect temperature changes in breast tissue. Because tumors are often “hotter” than surrounding tissue, the bra could theoretically detect cancer at a very early stage. And when it does, the garment would beep of flash or something.

Using microwave radiometry to screen for cancer isn’t new. But putting the technology in a bra is what’s making headlines. The trick, it seems, lies in shrinking the sensors and computer chips and other stuff down to manageable size.

The cancer-detecting bra probably won’t be an everyday wear kind of garment. It’s developers think it could work best as a kind of home screening device to be worn periodically.

What about the fellas? Not to worry, say the bra’s developers. There’s no reason, at least in theory, why the same technology couldn’t be imbedded in briefs to screen for bladder, prostate, and other cancers.

    Re: for the fellas

Maybe they could work this technology into “The Bro”, which, I think, is also still in the design phase.

I’d rather wear a special bra than be clamped in for a mammogram.

Seems like a pretty convenient device to save time and aid in early detection.

Weren’t doctors talking about simple blood tests for cancer in our future? I wonder what the status is on that …

    What an excellent idea!

Anything that can detect cancer at a very early stage will be a terrific invention.

    Well done that person.
