Kayaking with the dolphins

Bottlenose dolphin - NOAA photoSometimes moments come along when you can be close to animals in their natural habitats. One such magical moment came along for me today while sea kayaking in Delaware Bay.

A friend and I were paddling in his two-person sea kayak near the shore off of Cape May Beach, New Jersey. We paddled for 30 minutes with the beach on our starboard, then turned around and started back. Soon after we saw some dolphins surfacing closer to the beach and moving away from us. So we turned around and headed on a course to intercept them.

Soon we found ourselves amid a pod of 16 or so dolphins. Some surfaced, or arced out of the water, in pairs or in fours. One pair included an adult with a smaller baby dolphin. A dolphin even surfaced not five feet from me — it was incredible.

We could hear and see the dolphins clearing their blowholes. I worried that these large creatures would jump or bump into our boat, but that didn’t happen. We had maybe 15-20 minutes of paddling among the dolphins before they sped up and went out to the middle of the bay.

This experience left me in a state of awe and wonder. We were paddling in their domain, the bay, and we came upon them by chance. For 20 minutes we were able to coexist in close proximity with these beautiful creatures. I’ll never forget it.

YES! for years I have watched dolphins right off the coast of Virginia Beach, and yesterday I finally had the chance to visit them. My girlfriends parents allowed us to take their 2 man kayak to the beach. It was amazing, dolphins were everywhere. I wasnt sure about the animals behaviors so we stayed about 7 feet away most of the times, but it was still so amazing. I want to now find out if I can actually stay along with them without interfering or them bumping us.
