Sometimes moments come along when you can be close to animals in their natural habitats. One such magical moment came along for me today while sea kayaking in Delaware Bay.

I recently interviewed ecologist and butterfly expert Arthur Shapiro about the recent decline in some butterfly populations. He is a professor at the University of California, Davis; his expertise is California butterflies, especially the ones in northern California that he has studied for the last 37 years.

Solar power and ‘green mortgages’

We’re enduring a heat wave this week in the Washington, D.C. area, and it’s not even summer. All the sunshine and heat has me thinking about solar power: It makes a ton of sense, but is it economical? Can I afford it? Turns out that solar hot water is the place to start.
