Serious effort afoot to reduce burping bovines

Teddy Roosevelt said “do what you can with what you have where you are.” I guess that covers everything from humanitarian efforts to environmental ones and now, burping cows. Reuters reports today scientists in the UK are proposing development of cows feed that will have the net effect of cutting the belch factor, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Excuse me!Belching 100 to 200 litres of methane gas a day, cows are not doing their share to save the environment. Since they are dependent upon us for food, well, again, it’s up to us. Check out the article HERE.

Solution: Stop feeding beans to the cows.

You know, this cow article sounds kind of goofy, but I love it anyway. It’s a great example of how people will see a problem and attack it from all sides. We humans are an ingenious, adaptable bunch of folks! Burping cows? Sure. Change the feed.

That’s why I’m hopeful about the coming century! All these little fixes are going to add up to the continuation of our human culture …

I thought the article was goofy too, but just goofy enough to be food for thought. All these little fixes are indeed going to add up to the continuation of our human culture, and maybe a viable cow population too — one that is not bred for the slaughterhouse in such mass quantities! We already know we need to eat more vegetables and fruit, and less meat. The US will never look like India with cows enjoying a sacred status and wandering the streets, but maybe less of these poor creatures will go to the slaughterhouse, and we will get healthier at the same time. And reduce greenhouse gasses to boot!

Before the bovine, there was the bison belching methane into the atmosphere. Much ado about nothing. Termites are our real enemy. Worlwide, termites emit more methane than all other living sources combines.

Do you think the Orkin man could help?
